What Happens to Transparency?
WEBP supports transparent pixels even when using lossy (smaller-file) compression — something JPG can’t do at all. By default, this tool keeps any transparency in your source image intact. If you’d rather flatten the image onto a solid background instead, switch to “Add solid color” and pick your color before converting.
How Quality Affects WEBP File Size
WEBP uses adjustable lossy compression, similar to JPG, but is typically 25-35% smaller than a JPG at equivalent visual quality. For most web use, 80-90% quality is a good balance. Drop lower only if file size is the top priority, such as for large batches of thumbnail images.
